Into Chaac's Lair

A diver descends through the clear waters of a cenote near Tulum, Mexico. The Yucatan Peninsula is dotted with thousands of these cenotes, a word derived from the Yucatec Maya “dzonot or ts'onot” which means well. The Mayan believe that Chaac, the god of rain, lives at the bottom of sacred cenotes. These natural pits, or sinkholes, result from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath and reveal the mighty underground rivers that traverse the peninsula.
