River of Life

Bears hate to put their ears underwater, so they often 'snorkel'. They put their eyes underwater to look for salmon that are hiding in the pools while keeping their ears above water so they can listen for any outside threats. The biggest concern for bears on these rivers is the threat of other bears or hunters. I took great comfort when this bear snorkeled up to me on the river bank. It seemed more concerned with other bears than with me. I sat motionless and let her hear my voice while grabbing a few images as she came closer.
