Can I Be Your Assistant?
I get this question a lot, and I wish I could say yes to everyone as I like meeting enthusiastic people. Often I want to tell people that it's not as fun as it looks.
Due to the dangerous nature of my work, my assistants and interns have to be highly trained ice divers, pilots, and mountaineers. Sadly, it's impossible for me, safety-wise, to bring in anyone new at this time.
If you are looking to begin in this field, my advice is to approach photographers whose work you admire and be
specific about what you're looking to gain from the experience. How
long would you like to work with them - is this an internship or a job -
will you volunteer your services - will you pay to travel to or with
them? Mention any special
skills you possess (outdoor training, diving, sailing, etc) in your
outreach email because you never know which qualities will appeal to someone
looking for an assistant or intern.
I have been blessed to work with several great assistants over the years: Goran Ehlme, Jeremy Stewart, Jed Weingarten, Bjorn Theodórsson, Wayne Smith, Chris Grice, Derek Crowe, Ryan Seibel, Nathan Moller, Chris Miller, and Pierre D’Amours.
